How the Filipinos defeated themselves

November 2nd, 2007

This illustration was taken from The History of the Burgis, a very funny book about the history of the Philippines thru the eyes of the elite, reprimanding the elite. During the Spanish era, the colonizers kept the revolts at bay by using the troops from one regional group against another - Tagalogs versus Bisayas, Kapampangans versus Pangalatoks, and so forth. These various provinces have never really gotten along together, and had their own biases against each other. The Spaniards were quick to exploit this. Until now, some of that regionalism still remains.
