#18 - ang anting-anting
When I was younger, I was (nearly) as gullible as the next kid. I liked watching reruns of old Ramon Revilla films on TV. I wanted to have super powers like he did, deflecting bullets, becoming stronger, and whatnot. Tradition says that one should wait until midnight under a banana tree, and the catch the sap of the puso ng saging with the mouth as it falls. Well, there aren’t many trees in the city. Often, I’d imagine random things I found to be an agimat or anting-anting (charm or enchanted stone).
I also liked what we called “wishing feathers”, which are really dandelion seeds. The myth is that if you catch one in your hand, you can have any wish you want. When I was 5, I wished I could have the ability to fly. Then I’d be able to save people in trouble like Superman (or Supergirl). After making my wish, I climbed on a bench and jumped, hoping to fly my way unto the sky. Of course, nothing happened. And I was depressed for days, because I had a noble wish and it wasn’t granted.
Did you ever wish you had super powers?
