#12 - barangay ginebra

It was 1996, the year Alaska made a sweep of all 3 PBA conference championships (the All-Filipino, Commissioner’s Cup and the Governor’s Cup). Johnny Abarrientos, one of the best point guards ever, was crowned MVP. Of course, all this didn’t mean squat to my classmates, who were die-hard Ginebra fans (think Bal David, Marlou Aquino and Vince Hizon). I never could get them. Then again, when did I ever go for the popular choice?

Ginebra ran a helter-skelter type of ball game. Alaska, on the other hand, was very scientific. They ran the famous triangle offense, which involved a lot of passing and precise execution. Most teams just rely on their best player’s individual skills (shoot now, think later). Alaska was patient in looking for the open man, and so they got smart, easy, high-percentage shots. At times they could really make their opponents look like confused children. They had finess and they had teamwork.

So, who was your favorite Philippine basketball team?
